I lost my Nana Joyce last March, so last Christmas was the first without her—and to make it even harder, she was last of my grandparents to pass. We’re a family, like many others, with Christmas Day traditions that start on Christmas Eve, and doing those without them there just felt wrong, like there was a hole in the room. I actually wrote this song in the summer of 2023, with the talented @evilgeniusuk, just after losing Nana, because I was already dreading Christmas Day. I was anticipating all these emotions, especially after losing my other grandparents, who are featured in the artwork. This song was a big comfort to me last Christmas.
If you have been following me for a while, you’ll remember that Nana Joyce actually became a bit of a TikTok sensation in 2021—she would listen to my unreleased music in the car and give her opinions, and after she passed, the support from my audience was so touching. When I posted a snippet of this song as a tribute to her, it reached almost a quarter of a million views on TikTok, with people sharing their own stories of loss in the comments. If this song can bring any comfort to someone grieving during the holiday season, then I’ve done my job ♥️
